Trap opens with Cooper (Josh Hartnett) who is the father of Riley (Ariel Donoghue). Now Copper has won Father of the Year as he takes his daughter to the concert of a teen pop- Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan).
It is a special night for the daddy-daughter duo but just see the trailer and you’ll know the twist- the surprise. Copper, our very Riley’s father, is a serial killer. FBI is hunting for this guy and this entire concert is basically like a setup to trap – Cooper a.k.a. our serial killer.
And if you think you’ll have to sit through half the movie to guess the serial killer then you’re wrong. Shyamalan tells us this in the movie, he gives the ID of the killer in the very first few minutes of the movie.
And of course, our serial killer has to check his cell phone to ensure that his last victim is still alive (mind you he’s already killed and butchered dozens of people before that). This said the victim is still trapped in the basement of a suburban place. I guess to use it as a hostage against police in case he does get caught.
And shall I say how lucky this Cooper is? I mean the half-movie happens because he’s just one really lucky guy.
The director has tried to populate Trap with a few quirky characters here and there, We see a talkative salesman who gives information to Cooper in his talks like Butter Smooth. And if anyone recognized the original Parent Trap star, Haly Mills who is the head operating person in the sting operation of “Catch the Serial Killer”.
You also get to see a few cameos by pop stars Kid Cudi and Russ as fellow performers. They are simply used to distract and add to the storyline for moments.
As our Daddy Serial Killer wanders through the to look for an escape from the hall, he meets some souvenir seller Jamie who surprisingly also reveals some really important stuff like the password for inner people is “Hamilton” apart from the police. Like I said, one really lucky guy!
Want more? When Cooper needs to get backstage, he just happens to run into a producer, played by Shyamalan himself, who offers him a chance to have Riley cameo onstage with Lady Raven thus ensuring exit access. Psycho dad is so lucky he should buy a lottery ticket.
I mean this is not all. Copper is going backstage and he just runs into a producer who gives Copper a chance to Cameo with Riley on the stage with Lady Raven. So of course he gets exit access. I mean at this point he has higher chances of winning the lottery than anybody else.
All in all. this is an average movie to watch but a disappointing one if you expect the magic of Shyamalan to happen and save the movie.
