Sarfira is a remake of Soorarai Pottru a Tamil film which is struggling to capture the original script of Soorarai Pottru, both films have the same director Sudha Kongara. The story is moved from Madurai to Maharashtra but loses some of its soul, Akshay Kumar plays Veer, a character inspired by Captian G.R Gopinath, who revolutionized the air industry with the idea of low-cost aviation in India with Air Deccan.
While the movie Sarfira carries emotions it lacks the authenticity of Soorarai Pottru which has a regional essence and which made it perform well among the audience. There are rumours that Akshay’s work is now focused on quantity, not on quality and unlike the Tamil version where Surya’s portrayal was too intense and purposeful Akshay seems less engaging in this movie.
Although the story of Sarfira touches on all the important themes like challenging monopolies in the aviation industry it does not go deep into the socio-political aspects as the original film did. The movie has a supporting cast, Radhika Mandan as Veer’s wife Rani and Seema Biswas as Veer’s mother, both the supporting actors add depth to the story. Radhika’s performance stands out, though the chemistry between Radhika and Akshay lacks the natural essence compared to the Tamil version.
The movie will not bore you thanks to its editing and pacing and 155 minutes will not feel overly long, but there are many cultural differences that the remake failed to depict in the remake. The film works as a social entertainer but misses out on the layered storytelling and authenticity and fans could not make an emotional connect with the movie.
