“Khel Khel Mein”: A Journey of Myths, Mystery, and Mistrust

“Khel Khel Mein” (transl. All in the Game) is a 2021 Pakistani historical drama film directed and written by Nabeel Qureshi. Produced by Fizza Ali Meerza, it stars Sajal Aly and Bilal Abbas Khan. The movie’s backdrop is the separation of East Pakistan from West Pakistan in 19711. This film was released on 19 November 2021

Plot Summary

The film revolves around a drama club in a university, taking its production (based on the 1971 war that led to the breaking away of East Pakistan) to a drama festival in Dhaka. As myths, mystery, and mistrust grow, students explore history, making their own by choosing mutual respect, love, and peace over the obvious and expected. The Surrender of Pakistan sets the stage for their journey. 

 

Performances and Direction

Sajal Aly shines as Zara, while Bilal Abbas Khan delivers a compelling performance as Saad. Javed Sheikh’s portrayal of Sikandar adds depth to the narrative. Director Nabeel Qureshi skillfully balances drama and historical context, creating a thought-provoking experience. 

 

Music and Visuals

The soundtrack features soulful melodies like “Nayi Soch” and the spirited “Zid Pe Ara.” Shuja Haider and Asrar Shah’s compositions enhance the film’s emotional impact. Visually, the film captures the era’s essence, with attention to detail in costumes and sets. 

 

Reception

“Khel Khel Mein” collected PKR 25 million worldwide in its first week and PKR 60 million overall. It marked the revival of local cinema after the COVID-19 lockdown. While some praised its spirit of resilience, others criticized historical inaccuracies12
