Imtiaz’s masterstroke film Amar Singh “Chamkila” is based on the life of Punjabi Singer Amar Singh Chamkila, and through this telling, he asks us to consider questions of morality hypocrisy the pressures of Fame the role of the artist in society the role of the audience in creating an artist and finally who decides what constitutes and finally who decides what constitutes entertainment and which lines can or can’t be cross through the film we hear the word “Ashlil” which means obscene.
But yes Chamkila became famous for his songs as the audience enjoys them and gets pleasure from listening to them. The story shows how a below-middle-class man got fame and success and how he and his wife Parineeti Chopra played the role of Amarjot murdered in public in plain sight and yet no conviction or arrest happened, Chamkila was only 27 years old.
The cast of Chamkila Movie
Casting Diljit Dosanjh as Amar Singh Chamkila was Imtiaz Ali’s best decision as Diljit knows how an artist feels and he depicted the role of the world-famous singer very well, Diljit perfectly shows his innocence and vulnerability in the movie although his art was completely different from his character the man himself was gentle and affectionate and he justifies his art, his obscene songs by saying that he does this for his survival.
The movie shows Diljit and Parineeti’s romance with delicacy and tenderness and how they travel from village to village in an ambassador car with their troop when shoulders touch in the back seat their love story starts.
The entire storyline will take you in a flashback which is 4 decades old.
Kumud Mishra makes his special appearance in the movie was my favourite part as he explains that when society is in crisis people turn to entertainment even more.
You can go and watch Chamkila on Netflix as this movie is something different as compared to the recent releases.
